The weather is cool and perfect for snuggling up in blankets with a cup of coffee. The leaves are changing. Sweat drains away.
So I say it’s never too early to start planning your Thanksgiving dinner menu. right? Starting with a classic: Sweet Potato Casserole.
Growing up, I wasn’t very fond of sweet potatoes, so at every holiday dinner I would take a spoonful of Nana’s sweet potatoes and scoop them out neatly and eat a small roasted marshmallow as part of the serving—going on the dessert pile. untouched potatoes
Sweet Potato Casserole With Marshmallows And Streusel
I decided to try a taste of Nana’s Casserole, which is loaded with brown sugar, vanilla and a little cinnamon – but kick it up a notch by using not one, but two roasted sweet potatoes on top.
First, I topped the casserole with a layer of pecan-infused streusel on top for flavor and sweetness. The first topping is made with brown sugar, cinnamon and my favorite salted butter.
I try to be aware of the quality of the ingredients I use every day, but especially on special holidays. I wholeheartedly believe in the Butter Challenge and have used their products in my kitchen for years, so I reach for them when making a holiday side dish like Sweet Potato Casserole.
Healthy Sweet Potato Casserole
I think if you’re not a fan of marshmallows in your sweet potato, you can just stick with streusel.
So after some time in the oven to crisp up the streusel, I sprinkled in a healthy handful of marshmallows for good measure.
The result was this beautiful Sweet Potato Casserole with Streusel Topping – sweet potato perfection that would be a welcome side dish to any holiday spread.
Sweet Potato Casserole With Brown Sugar Walnut Crumb Topping
I loved how Nana made so many of her recipes, but I couldn’t bring myself to use canned sweet potatoes like in this sweet potato casserole with streusel topping.
To cook sweet potatoes in a pan, mash the washed sweet potatoes whole with a fork and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake the potatoes for 75-90 minutes or until they are nice and soft and cooked through.
Yes, 75-90 minutes is a long time to wait for potatoes to bake, but I like to use that time to clean the house or prepare other dishes like baked potatoes, feta cheese balls, or sweet and salty cheesecake.

You can roast the potatoes a day or two before you plan to make the sweet potato casserole.
One of the biggest questions I get about holiday recipes is whether they can be made ahead of time. No one really wants to prepare 100% of their dinner for the day.
Luckily, you can make this sweet potato casserole with streusel topping ahead of time. Just prepare the sweet potato portion in the pan, spread on the prepared dish, cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake.

When you’re ready to bake the pan, sprinkle the top of the pan and bake as directed, finishing with mini marshmallows.
If you use a glass jar, I recommend that you let the jar come to room temperature before putting it in the oven.
Enjoy this sweet potato casserole with streusel topping this holiday season. I know you’ll love these sweet, pecan- and marshmallow-filled creamy sweet potatoes.

The sweetie box delivery person canceled so I made my own at the last minute. I had to cook the potatoes to save time, but these were perfect! I also added green nutmeg and ginger instead of my Southern Living cookbook, but I put it differently. Everyone loved it! I might leave out the marshmallows or make half of the topping next time, everything was a little too sweet together and the streusel is amazing on its own! But I’m so happy to have the recipe, thanks!! I would be lost without your site!

Sweet Potato Casserole With Marshmallows
I’ve been making this for the past three or four years and realized it needed marshmallows! I’ve never used them before, and they are just amazing on top of streusel. I usually split it and add half of it with/without nuts. These are amazing and I highly recommend skipping the marshmallows!

I’m not a big fan of mashed sweet potatoes, so I peeled and rolled the potatoes and baked them on a baking sheet with brown sugar and butter. It is then placed in a casserole and served on top of streusel and marshmallows.

Scarlett, thanks so much for stopping by! Thanks for taking the time to comment. Happy baking! -James Sweet Potato Casserole has always been my favorite Thanksgiving side dish. I make sweet potatoes with fresh, roasted and brown sugar and pecan streusel that has a wonderful balance of sweet and savory flavors. Marshmallows aren’t just in sweet potato casseroles, and if you’re reading this post, you’ll probably agree. The buttery, crumbly streusel in my recipe is simply the best! I could eat it all by myself, that’s good.

It’s like eating candy. Who doesn’t love to eat what is basically a dessert as a side dish? And then you can still eat the cake? Topped with brown sugar and cream, spices, and crushed pecans, this Thanksgiving side dish is fun and totally delicious.
Easy to make. This recipe requires very little work to prepare, and most of the time you’ll be waiting for the sweet potatoes to roast and cool.

Do it in advance. Make-ahead recipes come in handy when preparing all Thanksgiving meals, and that’s one of the things I love about this dish. I usually roast the sweet potatoes a day or two in advance and prepare the filling and toppings. Then all I need to do is an hour before dinner, sprinkle on top and bake!
No marshmallows. Marshmallows don’t just top sweet potato casserole. End of discussion. Brown Sugar Pecan Streusel Crumble all the way!
So, are the sweet potatoes we buy at the grocery store sweet potatoes or yams? It turns out, the answer is not straightforward. My grocery store has containers marked with sweet potatoes and yams, but it’s really rare that they carry actual yams. Mostly, the tubers available are firm sweet potatoes or soft sweet potatoes, but not yams.
Baked Sweet Potato Casserole With Pecan Topping
If you want a sweet and tender sweet potato that can be roasted and eaten, or a casserole filling recipe, you should look for soft sweet potatoes (which your grocery store may label as yams). Not yams though. Look for the color of the peel, and any nicks or chips to see the color of the flesh inside to identify the true color. You can see in the picture below that I mistakenly bought hard sweet potatoes along with soft sweet potatoes. I didn’t even realize it until I roasted them and peeled them.
I have a recipe that has evolved over the years, from using my mom’s recipe for the longest time, until I realized she wasn’t working for me. The slow progression of ingredients eventually turned into a complete overhaul of the recipe to perfection.
