Old Fashioned Sweet Potato Casserole With Pecan Topping
Sweet potato casserole is a classic holiday dish that many people enjoy this time of year. It’s easy to make with a creamy sweet potato base and a candied pecan topping. And the best part about this side dish is that it’s easy to prepare in advance, leaving more time to enjoy with family and friends.
Sweet Potato Casserole {best Pecan Topping!}
The biggest debate when it comes to sweet potato casserole is whether or not it should have a pecan or marshmallow topping. This recipe is for a traditional pecan topping. However, if you prefer the gooey marshmallow topping, simply omit the pecan topping, cover the sweet potato mixture with mini marshmallows, and bake as directed. You can combine both toppings with the pecan topping by baking for 30 minutes, adding some marshmallows, and continuing to cook until the marshmallows are toasted and starting to melt.
Sweet potato pulao can be made up to 2 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator. To do this, prepare the sweet potato mixture as usual, spread it in a baking dish and cover it well. Assemble the pecan topping and place it in an airtight container. Store both in the refrigerator for 2 days. When ready to bake, remove the lid and add to the sweet potato mixture. Bake according to instructions.
To freeze, prepare the sweet potato mixture, place it in a baking dish, wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to bake, remove it from the freezer and let it thaw in the fridge overnight. Prepare topping, spread over sweet potato mixture, and bake as directed.

The eggs help hold the casserole together. Without eggs, the potatoes may fall apart or the pulao may become thin.
Sweet potato casserole is usually served as a side dish. However, it is so sweet that it can even be enjoyed as a dessert!
Sweet potatoes and yams differ greatly in taste and appearance. Sweet potatoes generally have a sweet taste and a smooth texture. Yams are starchier and have a similar consistency to russet potatoes.

Helpful Tips Make sure to use yams, not yams, for this recipe. For a creamier consistency, puree the sweet potatoes with a hand blender. Try to get ahead of the holidays by refrigerating or freezing them.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. There’s no pressure to buy and give presents at Christmas, the decorations are beautiful without being intrusive, and the day is all about the food! Additionally, the idea of taking a day just to be “grateful” is humbling.
We may sometimes complain about our situation, we may simply look at what others have accomplished with “wishful thinking,” but if we really look around we will find much more to be thankful for.

This is the same basic recipe that my mother has been serving for years. Some people like marshmallows on top and others like that mix of pecans and brown sugar. I like them both!

Pro Tip: If your sweet potatoes are still quite warm, wait until they are cooked for a minute or two before adding the egg. This will prevent the eggs from cooking in the heat of the sweet potatoes.
If you’re making this casserole for a holiday feast like Thanksgiving or Christmas, pair it with cornbread dressing, baked curry fruit, cheesy broccoli casserole, au gratin potatoes, and oven-roasted turkey!
To continue, boil and mash the sweet potatoes and place them in a baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Mix together the pecan crumbles and place in a separate zip-top bag. When ready to cook, bring potatoes to room temperature, add toppings, and bake.
Sweet Potato Casserole With Canned Yams
Completely cooled leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to three days. To freeze, place the pulao in an airtight container and store in the freezer for up to a month. Reheat in the microwave.
There isn’t much consensus among online sources about what constitutes a “medium sweet potato.” I generally consider about 6 to 8 ounces per sweet potato to be medium. For this recipe, you will need to purchase sweet potatoes that weigh about 20 to 24 ounces total.
In the United States, we often use the terms yam and sweet potato interchangeably. However, they are two completely different foods. The peel of yams is usually dark brown and the flesh is light, almost white, while the peel of sweet potatoes is red and the flesh ranges from golden yellow to orange or pink. You’re unlikely to find real yam in the produce section of the supermarket.
Pecan Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe
You can use canned sweet potatoes in this recipe, although there will be slight flavor differences. For this recipe you will need at least two 16-ounce cans of candied yam (not exactly yam – see above), drained well. You will also need to adjust the sugar since the yam is already sweetened in the can. I recommend the Bruce’s brand for canned candied sweet potatoes.
Yes you can! but make sure
