When it comes to Thanksgiving icons, a bowl of green beans is right up there! It was one of my grandmother’s favorite side dishes and she always made it for Thanksgiving dinner, along with turkey and mashed potatoes.
As a kid I thought it was my grandmother’s recipe, but when I got older and started making Thanksgiving dinner, I discovered that she used a classic Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole recipe! After all, why mess with the classics?

And the recipe is very popular not only in the Midwest, where my grandmother lived, but all over the country. Campbell estimates that 20 million Thanksgiving dinners are served each year, including mine.
But I’m always looking for ways to save oven space at Thanksgiving, so this year I thought, “Why not make Green Bean Casserole in the Deep Fryer?” I tried it last week and sure enough, it works well and. it cooks very quickly.
I’m including the instructions for cooking in a deep fryer below, along with a standard oven recipe. It’s not the way grandma made it, but I know she would love Green Bean Casserole in the Deep Fryer!

Cream of Mushroom Soup – You can try other condensed soups, but Cream of Mushroom Soup is a classic flavor.
Green Beans – The recipe is made for canned beans, but you can substitute frozen or fresh. I only use canned because it’s cheap and easy.
Gluten Free Green Bean Casserole (dairy Free)
Soy sauce – Soy sauce adds an umami flavor to the dish. It’s amazing how much difference soy sauce makes in flavor! It enhances the taste a lot and I think that is one reason why this side dish has stood the test of time.
Spices – do not add salt! Between the soy sauce and the soup, there is already a lot of salt in this recipe. A little black pepper is a nice addition though.
If you are using fresh green beans, you will need to wash them, cut off the ends of the stems and beat them. To reheat, cook them in a large pot of boiling water for about 2 minutes. If using canned green beans, just drain the cans. Stored beans should not be deleted.
Slow Cooker White Cheddar Green Bean Casserole
Mix cream of mushroom soup and milk in a bowl. I like to use my mom’s gold Corning bowl from the 1970s, just for nostalgia’s sake!
Stir to make the sauce smooth, mixing any lumps. Then add soy sauce and mix again.
Put the beans and half of the fried onions in the bowl with the soup mixture. Season with pepper and mix everything.
Velveeta Green Bean Casserole
To do this in a deep fryer, you need to find a baking dish that will fit inside. I used a standard 1 1/2 quart pan, which fit perfectly in my 5.8 quart Cosori fryer.
But I hadn’t figured out how to get it out of the air fryer basket without burning my hands after it was cooked. There wasn’t much space between the sides of the bowl and the basket!
I ended up picking it up with a spatula down. Long silicone gloves would also work. When I make this for Thanksgiving, I will be using a pan that is designed for frying and comes with a metal handle!
Cheesy Green Bean Casserole
Spray your chosen dish with non-stick spray, then pour the green bean mixture into it. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes, take it out and stir to make sure everything is hot. Smooth over and sprinkle with remaining 1/3 cup of fried onions.
Return to the oven at 350 degrees F for 2-3 minutes until the onions are golden brown. Then take out and serve.
Easy Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole
Choose a 1 1/2 to 2 quart baking dish. Spray with non-stick cooking spray, then add the bean mixture.
Bake in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Then remove and stir and check if the center is hot.
I’ve noticed that if my oven cooks a bunch of things at once like macaroni and cheese, rolls, and cornbread dressing, then it can take a long time to cook everything. So make sure the pan is cooked and hot in the middle.
Best Green Bean Casserole (no Soup)
Sprinkle the remaining fried onions on top. Return to the oven and cook for another 5 minutes until the onions are brown and crispy.
You can make this side ahead of time by mixing the bean mixture and keeping it in the fridge until you are ready to cook. Store in the container in which you plan to bake or in a separate container.
Since it will be cold, it will take a little time to cook. Cook for 15 minutes in a deep fryer or 35 minutes in the oven if coming from the fridge.
